Lieber Elio Astor, ich fürchte, ich habe zu lange über der Antwort auf deinen freundlichen Brief gebrütet zu menem Text gebrütet. https://kroestango.de/aktuelles/von-tango-taliban-mancherlei-primaten-und-eine-antwort-von-elio-astor/ Wenn ich nun etwas unwirsch wirke, hat das nicht zuletzt mit dem nagenden Gefühl eigener Unzulänglichkeit zu tun. Ich fürchte, mir ist (zu) wenig eingefallen, das nicht schon von anderen zum Thema gesagt worden ist. Auch von mir. (*)
Eine Passage Deines Textes hat mich jedoch ärgerlich gemacht: Die rührselige Geschichte von dem jungen Paar, dass sich durch deine Musik gefunden und sogar fortgepflanzt hat. Sorry, aber derlei Stories kann auch ein jodelnder Alleinunterhalter erzählen, der mit seiner Humtata-Musik durch bayerische Bierzelte tingelt. Zornesausbruch zu ende.
Ich habe großen Respekt vor der Leistung von Neo-DJs. Sie müssen ihre Musik in einem viel größeren Feld finden als die Traditionalisten. Wenn ich davon spreche, dass sie „Pop, Rock und Techno“ auflegen, soll das ihre Aufgabe nicht „trivialisieren“, sondern nur die Vielfalt der Musikrichtungen andeuten, um die sie sich zu kümmern haben. Ich könnte noch Klassik, Weltmusik etc. hinzufügen. In der hier abgebildeten Grafik sind auch Begriffe wie „Dubstep“ und „Chillstep“ zu lesen, von denen ich nicht einmal weiß, was sie bedeuten – aber ich fürchte: Für meine Ohren nichts Gutes. Der Abend „Three Shades of Neotango“ beim CTF 2019 hat meine Befürchtungen bestätigt. (**) Das gilt auch für die Mehrheit der Titel, die in den einschlägigen Facebook-Gruppen präsentiert werden. Je länger ich darin herumflaniere, umso konservativer werde ich. Und noch eine nicht völlig freundliche Bemerkung: Dass NeoDJs nicht „Selectors““ seien, sondern „Groovemaster“, wie es in dem Text heißt… für mich ist das die aufgeputzte Sprache der Werbeagenturen.
Aber zurück zur Sache: Als ich einmal geschrieben habe, Neotango sei „alles außer Tango“, ist diese Aussage zu Recht als Polemik erkannt worden. Das bedeutet aus meiner Sicht aber nicht, dass sie falsch sei. Im Gegenteil. Zum vorläufig letzten Mal dazu die praktische Text-Grafik:
„Wir übernehmen das gesamte argentinische Tanz-Erbe: Aber nicht die Musik, weil sie unsere Zeit und unsere globale Kultur nicht repräsentiert.“ (meine Übersetzung)
Der traditionelle Tango wird also ausgesperrt. Nicht zeitgemäß. Passt nicht in die aktuelle globale Kultur. Wenn das keine „Talibanisierung“ ist. . . Diesmal von der anderen Seite.
Um es kurz zu machen: Ich bezweifle, dass die Zukunft des Tango sich mit der Not-Betankung durch Elemente sichern lässt, die in den Clubs (in meiner Jugend sagte man: Discotheken) zu finden sind. Ein gewisses Unbehagen an der Entwicklung nehme ich auch in der Neo-Szene wahr. Der Video-Künstler und DJ Volker Marschhausen http://www.tanguerilla.de kritisiert in der „Tangodanza“ den Trend zu einer, seiner Meinung nach, gewissen Beliebigkeit in der Musikauswahl der Szene. Stattdessen schlägt er vor vor, auf dem zu bestehen, was er die „Tango-DNA“ nennt.
Ich mag Volkers komplexe Erwägungen hier nicht wiederholen. Stattdessen möchte ich wiedergeben, was ich in der Ankündigung einer Veranstaltung der slowenischen Neo-DJane Zdenka Zatler ( https://www.facebook.com/people/TDj-Zdenka-Zatler/100010091839236 ) auf Facebook gefunden habe: „Dieses Mal wollen wir ausschließlich Tango Nuevo Musik spielen, in den Rhythmen von Tango, Waltz, Milongas von weltbekannten Künstlern wie Astor Piazzolla, Perfect Tango, Alfredo Zitarossa, Maria Salgado, Hugo Diaz, Tango Jointz, Carla und Osvaldo Pugliese und viele andere.“ Damit kann ich leben. Aber die Formulierung „dieses Mal“ lässt mich schließen, dass die Mischung auch anders sein kann
Vom Tango zu behaupten, er sei nicht in der Lage, Empfindungen der Menschen von heute ausdrücken, finde ich dagegen nicht nur arrogant, sondern auch geschichtslos und lebensfremd. Unsere Konzertsäle sind voll von Menschen, die sich von noch erheblich älterer Musik angesprochen fühlen. Die Tangoszene, ob neo oder old fashioned, stellt dagegen nur eine winzige Subkultur dar. Eine Subkultur allerdings, die erheblich lebendiger ist, als – ich geb’s ja zu – die Playlists in allzu vielen unserer Milongas vermuten lassen, deren Veranstalter sich als traditionell verstehen.
Das beginnt mit Coverversionen alter Maestros im heutigen Geist und führt schließlich zu aktuellen Neuschöpfungen. Unter den Gruppen, die bei uns auftreten, gibt es kaum noch eine, die nicht begonnen hätte, eigene Kompositionen zu schreiben. Dass sie sich nur sehr langsam durchsetzen, liegt nicht zuletzt am Geschmack des Tangopublikums, das dazu neigt, auf Nummer sicher zu gehen. Leider wird dieses Konservatismus von den meisten Tangolehrern und DJs bekräftigt. Sie machen die Tänzerinnen und Tänzer nur ausnahmsweise mit aktuellen Kompositionen bekannt. So können keine neuen Standards entstehen. Geschweige denn: neue Hits.
Wer einen Begriff davon bekommen möchte, wie kreativ und vielfältig die Szene in Buenos Aires ist, rufe sich bei Spotify die Playlist eines mehrwöchigen Festivals auf, das 2018 im CAFF stattgefunden hat, einem alternativen Tango- und Kulturzentrum in Buenos Aires. 60 (in Worten: Sechzig) zeitgenössische Tango-Gruppen haben daran teilgenommen. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/466WiLFGaVvLyiPCn8pvTm Wenn irgendwo die Zukunft des Tango zu finden ist, dann in dem, was sie hervorbringen.
Das „Sexteto Visceral“ https://www.sextetovisceral.com.ar, eine der besonders interessanten Gruppen gastiert in diesen Tagen in Berlin – im „Zapatissimo“, einer ziemlich kleinen Location für Latino-Dance. http://www.zapatissimo.de. Der Besitzer Fernando Zapata kennt viele Musiker, deshalb machen sie gern Station bei ihm. Dafür sei Fernando an dieser Stelle gelobt und gepriesen. Zum Schluss eine Komposition des Sexteto Visceral – aufgenommen beim erwähnten Festival im CAFF.

Dear Thomas, everybody heas their own ideas, i believe that future of traditional milongas are traditional milongas where music from the golden era of tango is served, with all its annexed rituals.
In parallel we are building a community of open minded people who dances the embrace on contemporary music we like. People who likes such events will go, people who don’t will not participate, and probably if they would do they would ruin the atmosphere.
This community is very respectful towards people who like dancing on old vinils music talking about another epoch. Sometimes, instead of being described as free people who dance tango on music they like, they are publicly attacked and being told that they are destroyer of tango, their work and efforts and mood thus being vilified.
This is „talibanization“ from my point of view, in a „free“ world.
You wrote about the future of tango and about the tango DNA.
The tango DNA is in the orquestas of Julio de Caro, Juan D’Arienzo, Di Sarli, Anibal Troilo… In a famous interview Felix Picherna explains that there is no way for a contemporary tango because times have changed, people are changed and feelings and culture has changed, and that epoch of singers, orquestas and poets is gone, there cannot be tangos of modern world speaking about modern society.
I agree with him and with you too when you say that the future of tango is tango. There are plenty of modern tango orquestas which you mentioned and they belong to a culture which sadly refuses them, even if they try to reproduce the melodies and poetry of 100 years ago. The problem with contemporary tango is not with tango but it’s with tango dancers whose ears are biased and affected by the thousand times they have heard and danced Poema by Canaro.
When i first heard about Neotango it was from Dario Viri, the violinist from Silencio Orquesta, at a dinner with friends about 10 years ago, he told me it’s not fair to call tango music which is not tango, it’s not respectful for traditional milongas and culture, this music is not tango, it’s Neotango he told me. I tried to research about neotango and i found about a neotango Rave in Bremen, organized by the „king of Neotango“, which was at its second or third edition, and there i met the same musical variety and open mindness i was researching, the visual artist Volker Marschhausen played mostly trance music, other people were playing balkan music, Jean Marc Vandel was playing world music, and nobody ever complained the lack of dna.
Sometimes i try to imagine that what you are describing could once happen, that traditional milongas will embrace contemporary orquestas, but when i think about what i do, focusing only on the dancers tastes and feelings, i realize that i really love the society i live, freedom will save us, dancers will save us from those who state what is right and what is wrong. Thanks again for your time and attention, i hope my point of view is clear now.
Zeit, eine Lanze für Elio Astor zu brechen. Mir geht es nicht um seine Texte; man mag unterschiedlicher Ansicht sein, ob er sich vielleicht besser aufs Musikzusammenstellen konzentrieren sollte. Darin ist er jedenfalls genial. Okay, ich habe ihn erst einmal erlebt. Vielleicht war er an diesem Abend nur zufällig besonders gut. Jedenfalls hat er mit seiner Musikwahl eine ganz besondere Stimmung erzeugt, die ich in dieser Dichte auf noch keiner anderen Nontango- Milonga erlebt habe. Ich spreche von Musik, die wunderbar zur Tango- Bewegungssprache paßt. Die Theorie dahinter ist mir egal. Ich bin Gefühlshörer und -tänzer; mir ist egal, welche Stilrichtung ein Stück ist oder was der Hund des Sängers zum Mittagessen hatte.

I hate cult of personality and therefore I never will accept to be called »king of Neotango” and as I recall, I never was titled in this way.
It is enough to be seen as pathfinder for Neotango events in recent 20 years.

This is the proof that from beginning of the NeotangoRave 80% of it’s DJanes played subgenre of Tango mixed with contemporary music styles. They preferred Tango DNA instead of Electro, Balkan, Fusion and Trance – contrary to the claim made by Elio´s comment.
The comfortable situation changed abruptly in 2012, when species extinction of most leading Neotango bands started and the musical support of DJanes ceased. The dissolution of Gotan Project in May 2012 created a domino effect on the most important NeoTango bands (NarcoTango, Gotan Project, Otros Aires) and dramatically decreasesd live concerts of others (Bajofondo, ElectrocuTango, Tango Crash, San Telmo Lounge, ETango).
The musical scarcity of resources forced many DJanes to search for musical alternatives beyond Tango influences. Depending on personal preferences and musical influences, the entire spectrum of contemporary music styles slipped into their playlists. World, Hip Hop, TripHop, Classic Crossover, Rock, Blues, Dubstep, Ethno – everything became part of their selection, as far as the songs were considered as »danceable«.
That was the birth of todays mainstream Alternative DJ style, unfortunately taking over the term »Neotango«.
I don´t have any serious reservations about DJanes preferring »Alternative Music«. It’s a matter of their individual, personal taste and there will be a majority of DJanes serving »Alternative Music« at upcoming NeotangoRave. Additionally there are a lot of dancers, who like to improvise to this specific style.
Thus, it’s an expression of my appreciation and tolerance to support those talents, taking their first steps with DJing.
But we should call a »spade a spade« Neotango is Neotango and Alternative is Alternative.
Or with other words as Philippe Cohen Solal indicated:
»With Gotan Project, the territory is tango, dance meets tango. So don’t expect us tomorrow to do reggae, or something like this. Gotan is tango, and we will stay in that territory… But we will sometimes take the freedom to bring tango out of its territory.«
NeoTango represents a temporary peak in the ongoing history of Tango and Firpo, D´Árienzo, Troilo, Biagi, Salgan, Alvarez, Diaz, Pugliese and Piazzolla are our roots. Just because they are persona non grata on every traditional milonga, they are part of our history and have to appear on the menu of every Neolonga. This includes contemporary rearrangements of traditional Tangos (Sexteto Milonguero, Cachivache, El Afronte, Orquesta Típica Andariega …) and applies particularly to the New Guard of BA and European NeoTango orchestras such as Astillero, OTFF, Tango XXI, Ciudad Baigón, Silbando, La Típica Sanata, Finisterre Tango and Quinteto Zárate and others, who are more »piazzollaesk«.
Dear Volker, dear Elio, somehow I feel a bit lost under those mountains of words. What is the essence? And why is it so important to use so many words? Is it about PR for your products, or an ego thing? As for Elio, I already wrote that I think he is kind of a magician with music selection. I did not hear Volkers work – I don’t do jumping through hoops of trying to get in events which are fully booked 5 minutes after the registration opens – but I am sure you are also a genius. Anyway, I can do without a theoretical roof or justification of tango-esque or not above the dancefloor.
nachdem zur jahrtausendwende der electrotango in erscheinung trat, wurde ein zeitgenössisches label für tangoveranstaltungen etabliert, die sogenannt „traditionelle milonga“. dem label ist ausgrenzung auf drei ebenen immanent, auf der ebene des zeitabschnitts, der lokalen herkunft und der rhythmen, die auch zu der zeit und in der region, auf die man sich bezieht, bei tanzveranstaltungen gespielt wurden.
es gab einige, die sich dieser ausgrenzung widersetzten. so entwickelte sich die neotango-gemeinschaft, die diversität und entwicklung schätzt. dort nun erneut eine ausgrenzung vornehmen zu wollen, indem man die diversität durch abwertung von tanzstilen, musikrichtungen und ausschluss von personen zu reduzieren versucht, widerspricht dem geist dieser gemeinschaft.
diversität stellt keine bedrohung für die weiterentwicklung des tangos dar, ganz im gegenteil, sie ist deren treibstoff.
Ach, Andreas Lange, wenn ich den Teil der Debatte recht verstanden habe, der in eurer „Neotango-Gemeinschaft“ spielt, geht es Volker Marschhausen (Tanguerilla), auf den Du ja offenbar anspielst, nicht um Ausgrenzung, sondern um begriffliche Klarheit. Als Flaneur durch die verschiedenen Winkel der Welt das Tango find ich das gut. Ich werd nie vergessen, wie ich zum ersten Mal an einer kleinen, aber feinden Neotango-Veranstaltung hier in Berlin teilgenommen habe: Da gabs kein einziges Musikstück, zu dessen Bezeichnung mir das Wort „Tango“ eingefallen wäre. Damals bin ich auf die Formulierung gekommen: Neotango ist alles außer Tango. Volker hilft mir, das anders zu sehen.
Thomas hat vollkommen Recht, es geht tatsächlich um Abgrenzung der Begriffe und nicht um Ausgrenzung von Personen.
Alles andere sind böswillige Unterstellungen.
Also in kurzen, klaren Sätzen.
1. In meinen Playlists finden sich mind. 90% Tracks mit Tango DNA, ein Maßstab den ich an mich selbst anlege
2. Auf meinen Events jedoch toleriere ich jede Form Alternativer Musik und DJanes
3. Ausserdem toleriere ich dort jede Art von Tanzstil
4. Ich verstehe das als Förderungskonzept vor allem von experimentellen und innovativen Neueinsteigern
5. Alternative Musik und Neotango sind DJ-Konzepte, die sich in den zurückliegenden 20 Jahren herausgebildet haben
6. Die wachsende Zahl innovativer Orchester (190) wird neue musikalische Maßstäbe setzen und dadurch erheblichen Einfluss auf diese Konzepte ausüben.
